Born to a musician father in Pisa, Galileo Galilei grew up to transform astronomy and physics through careful observation and mathematics. His telescopic discoveries and defense of heliocentrism eventually put him at odds with the Roman Catholic Church, leading to his trial and house arrest. He is often called the father of modern observational astronomy and the scientific method.
