Finnish War Rages On

By April 1809 Russian troops had already crossed the ice of the Gulf of Bothnia in a famous winter campaign, and Swedish resistance was collapsing. The war, which had begun in February 1808, would end that September with the Treaty of Fredrikshamn, forcing Sweden to cede all of Finland to Russia and ending over six centuries of Swedish rule there.

World Health Organization Founded

When the constitution of the World Health Organization entered into force after ratification by 26 member states, it created the United Nations' dedicated health agency, headquartered in Geneva. The date is now marked annually as World Health Day. Over subsequent decades the WHO would coordinate the eradication of smallpox, battle polio, and become the central global authority during pandemics from HIV/AIDS to COVID-19.
